Naracoorte Multi Sports Complex

Consultation has concluded

Update 2

A community led committee is exploring which sports and organisations could possibly share facilities and work together.

Update 1

The notes from the discussion held on 20 September 2016 are available in the document library or by clicking here.

The notes will be used to provide a report to Council and so sporting clubs can report back to their members.

Suggestions can be submitted to Council until 30 September. A feedback form is available in the document library or by clicking here.

Background

Sporting clubs and organisations at the Naracoorte North Parklands Complex and interested members of the community are invited to a preliminary discussion on the possibility of establishing a Multi Sports Facility on the land leased to the Naracoorte and District Sports Centre on:

Tuesday 20 September at 7.30pm at the Naracoorte Football Clubrooms

The purpose of the discussion is for clubs and organisations and community members to be involved in contributing ideas and suggestions on what facilities you would like available at the Naracoorte Sports Complex in the future.

This is potentially a major community project for the medium to long term future.

All input received will be collated and used to consider the viability and possibility of a multi sports facility located at the Naracoorte Sports Complex in the future.

The Naracoorte and District Sports Centre Committee includes representatives from the individual Clubs located at the site, including football, netball, tennis, hockey, soccer, squash, basketball, angling, drag racing (SEDRA) and the men’s shed. The area also includes a community garden, and hosts the Kowree Naracoorte Football League headquarters.

The Naracoorte North Parklands Complex is an important open space for the community. Council’s approach to managing open space is outlined in its Open Space Strategy which aims to ensure the provision of high quality open space for all residents and visitors to the Council area.

The Naracoorte Sports Centre is on Crown land under the care, control and management of Council. Council has leased the land to the Naracoorte and District Sports Centre Committee until 2034.

To ensure enough seating is provided we encourage people to register to attend the discussion on 8760 1100 or email council@nlc.sa.gov.au

Background

In February 2016, Council received a letter from the Naracoorte & District Basketball Association (NDBA) seeking Council’s “support and collaboration to investigate and implement improvements of the current basketball facilities and expansion to accommodate the growth of basketball in the local community”.

In response to the letter Council resolved to “work with the appropriate parties towards a possible expansion and repair of the aging Naracoorte Basketball Complex”.

An initial discussion has occurred between Council, the Naracoorte District Basketball Association and the Naracoorte Football Netball Club. From this discussion the importance of involving the wider community was identified, particularly clubs and organisations currently located at the Naracoorte North Parklands Complex and involved in the Naracoorte and District Sports Centre Committee.

This initial discussion also suggested widening the scope to examine the possibility of establishing a Multi Sports Facility. The rationale for taking a wider look is that modern multipurpose sporting facilities tend to result in lower operating costs for each club and maximises the use of the facilities.

The need to address the ageing basketball complex creates an opportunity to examine this. Rather than the community constructing a stadium for one sport this discussion provides an opportunity to explore options and the possibility of establishing a Multi Sports Facility.

As a result the Naracoorte and District Sports Centre Committee and the Naracoorte Lucindale Council are inviting Clubs and Organisations located at the Naracoorte North Parklands Complex and interested members of the community to a preliminary discussion on the possibility of establishing a Multi Sports Facility on the land leased to the Naracoorte and District Sports Centre.

All ideas are encouraged and will be recorded.

Some ideas may be pipe dreams however a starting point is needed and a discussion of this type is the best approach to get started.

The Open Space Strategy is premised on the community having access to useable, safe and attractive open spaces; and that these spaces are managed to the highest standards that reflect the needs and uses of the community.

Please refer to the Open Space Strategy in the document library if you would like to learn more.
